We’ve all heard of the Tortoise and the Hare story. The Tortoise is seen as methodical and accurate, while Hare is lackadaisical. I thought about another lesson these friends taught me. They both finished a race but at different times and in different ways. There’s more than one way to skin a chicken: a life skill we should remember. It’s easy to criticize others for taking a contrasting route when completing a task. Some people set their minds to do a particular project and immediately get it done. Others may choose to accomplish a similar goal with a slower approach. I am not one to criticize either method. I believe some people are introverts. Others are extroverts; sometimes, it depends on the task. In some instances, perseverance plays a massive part in reaching the goal. Isn’t that the focus— to reach the goal?

Can we learn to be faster at completing a task? I do housework and exercise faster with some Motown playing in the background. Just saying. However, I may listen to classical music through my air pods if I want to write a blog post.

In our society, there’s a hurry up and finish mentality. Finishing an assignment gives the illusion of success. What’s the purpose—to get finished or have a task worthy of praise? In my experience, “Hurry up and wait” is a writer’s life. Hurry up and write your proposal. Hurry up and solicit an agent. Hurry up and write another manuscript.

Have you ever contemplated what would have happened had the Tortoise and the Hare collaborated on the best way to reach the finish line? Collaboration is a life skill often overlooked because competition and recognition appear more important than the best outcome. When we refuse to work with others, we miss out on a new experience or learning a different viewpoint. Or maybe we miss the opportunity to share our knowledge and expertise with others. The next time you question another person’s method for completing a task, observe and evaluate the end product. What made it successful or not? Did you glean a new approach? Maybe there is something you have experienced that would help someone accomplish their task more efficiently. Collaboration is working together to get the best outcome.

Should we learn to slow down and enjoy the ride? Should we speed up and pass the unnecessary nuances to get other things done? Is there a happy medium? Indeed, each task has its time frame. Be conscious of your criticism of others. Learn new skills. Appreciate the unique qualities that God gave you and others. Combine your talents with the talents of others. Be a lifelong learner—fast or slow, just saying.

  1. Oh I want to be a “hare” when it comes to cleaning, but I seem to get the “but firsts”! I’ll clean that shower BUT FIRST let me straighten out that drawer I just saw!!! HahahHhHah

  2. Deanna, what a perfect example the tortoise and the hare story provides for your point. Collaboration with others as we trust God helps us to the finish line. Without the cooperation and help I received as a teacher and an author, I’d still be striving to reach some of the goals I’ve met. Friends who join our race are blessings from God. Thanks for this encouraging post.

  3. Deanna, this is a beautiful piece that provides much to ponder. I kept thinking about our “Target” words like perseverance and collaboration and how they are relevant in many circumstances.
