Surprise! Do you like surprises? I’m on the fence about them.

My husband and a few friends surprised me on my fiftieth birthday with a dinner at our local Mexican Restaurant. Needless to say, that was a shock and unexpected after teaching all day, being tired, and looking like I had jogged to the restaurant. Don’t get me wrong, the thought that they put into this was awesome, and I had a fantastic time! I guess I feel a little awkward being on the receiving end.

There are those surprises that cause you to smile. A surprise call from a friend, a card in the mail for no reason, a visit for no reason—I think you get the picture.

Recently, my daughter called with an announcement that she was getting married. That wasn’t a surprise; we knew that she and Ben were serious about each other. The surprise was when she told me the date was within the next three weeks!

What? You can’t make this up. I looked at my calendar and noticed that I was already keeping my grandchildren that weekend, so my son and daughter-in-love could attend a wedding in Nashville. Well, Erica didn’t invite us anyway. It was a matter-of-fact statement. The surprise came when my son found out and changed his plans in order to celebrate with his sister. That meant I could also be present for her.

My daughter was surprised that we made plans to fly down for the occasion. She had not expected that. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to support and witness this huge milestone in her life.

I have two weeks to get ready. So many decisions to make – where to stay, what kind of transportation, what to wear, etc.

With so many surprises on the table, I’ve decided to share them with you on my blog this month.

I am a member of a Facebook group called Sassy Faith, led by Michelle Medlock Adams. Coincidentally, the next night, after Erica’s surprise call, Michelle told a story about her daughter and grandson, reminding us that God isn’t surprised and we should trust Him.  That was a God Wink, for sure.

Inquiring minds, also known as nosy people, would love to hear about a surprise in your life. Please share in the comments below.

Thank you.

  2. Oh my gosh Deanna! This is wonderful! How can I help you get ready!!? Should we go shopping? Need jewelry? Purse? I got you!

  3. I have a sister that lives in Greer, SC and she is always sending me packages in the mail. When I get a package that has her return address on it, I know I will love what is inside. I do love surprises!

  4. Like you I am not a huge fan of surprises, big ones at least. I love the little ones you mentioned. I wonder if it is because we are educators and are so accustomed to having to have our plans for the day? With that said I am so happy you and your family will be there for your daughters wedding! Congratulations!

  5. My out of town grandchildren surprised at my 80th birthday party. So fun to hug those kids I hadn’t seen in months.
