As a teacher for 35 years, my profession required extensive learning from the state, county, and school. I also wanted to learn specific topics to enhance my teaching—new curriculum, discipline techniques, reading and writing strategies, learning disabilities, technology, etc. I usually raised my hand first to attend training.
I tried to instill the love of learning in my children and my students. You can accomplish many things in life if you have that inquisitive nature. If you don’t know something, there’s probably a book that will help show you the way—or the internet!
As a firm believer in Brain-Based Learning for children and adults, I have discovered many ways to enhance your brain to facilitate learning, and I will touch on more of those in a future blog. Here’s one of my findings:
Bonnie Wong, Ph, director of neuropsychology at Massachusetts General Hospital ‘s Frontotemporal Disorders Unit, discusses how learning new things can benefit memory, processing, concentration, mood, and even self-confidence. I agree and feel recharged just hearing or reading something new or reintroduced. I am a total believer in Brain-Based Learning for children and adults.
I challenge you to learn something new. Pick something that you’re interested in, or you may not stick with it. Maybe it’s useless facts on Jeopardy- how do they know all of that stuff? Perhaps it’s learning about a place you’re planning to visit. It’s up to you. Do your brain some good and keep on learning Just saying…

Awesome reminder that the world is so full of interesting things, people and places! I learn something new every time we travel!
Missy,
You have a wealth of knowledge. I concur that our experiences expand our knowldege of people, places, and things. This can happen anywhere. I feel we should always be open to meeting others and learning. I recently learned you can buy a portable refrigerator thermometer.LOL
Your infamous words, “You don’t know it…yet!”
Erica,
Yes, you are definitely right! The power of “YET” will keep you learning. I may have to expand on that in a future blog. There are still so many things to learn. I guess you can teach an old lady new tricks; I’m writing a blog. Keep learning and expanding your knowledge.
I think knitting or crocheting may be next on my list! It’s always fun to try something new, especially learning from a friend!
Allyson,
You are always willing to try new things. Crocheting is not my thing. My Grandmama Gladys tried to teach me in elementary school. She got frustrated with me and sent me outside to play. I admired her gift of effortlessly producing beautiful masterpieces. She gifted me several things throughout her life.
Deanna, I enjoy learning new facts from travel, books, and conversation. The process keeps our brain active and adds interest when we talk with others. It’s interesting how we continue to learn more each time we read the Bible. Thank you for challenging us to keep on learning.
Jeannie, you are right on the money. The Bible continues to teach us,even as we reread familiar passages. I am intrigued to be around people and learn about their experiences. Some of those people have books being published, just saying. Congratulations!
Hi Deanna, your post motivated me to open an puzzle with 500 pieces that a friend had sent me! I have never been good at them but I will try to learn how to keep track of the pieces and get it done! I will let you know!
Patty, I love puzzles. However, it seems that life gets in the way when I start one. My classroom always had a designated puzzle table for students to work on at their leisure. I found myself and other colleagues stopping to add a piece. Puzzle solving is a great brain based activity.
Love your new blog! You are an inspiration! I love learning, exploring, meeting new people, etc. On my most recent trip to Colorado, I learned a couple of things: 1) if the rafting company offers you splasher pants, take them, and 2) book the afternoon option not the early morning BRrrr!
Vicki,
I’ll have to rememember that if I visit Colorado. It sounds like a great adventure. Was it scary? I’d love to hear more.
